Old bandmate of Jimmy Page to reform

MUSICIANS could step into Jimmy Page's boots as one of the legendary guitarist's first bands reforms in a Lincolnshire village.

Dave Walton, of Bardney, near Lincoln, was the lead singer of 1960s teen pop band First Gear. The band, which featured a teenage Jimmy Page on lead guitar, had a hit single in 1965 with The In Crowd.

The single sold 20,000 copies nationwide and thrust First Gear into the spotlight.

The band were poised to support Dusty Springfield on a 22-date tour, but they split the fortnight before the tour and were replaced by The Zombies.

Jimmy Page would go on to join The Yardbirds and later form Led Zeppelin.

Now, Mr Walton wants to reform First Gear and is looking for musicians to join him for a tour along the east coast.

He said: "One of my best memories is, of course, working with Jimmy Page.

"Jimmy was on quite a few records at the time, including ours, but he was still a very nice bloke and very humble. "He was also very well-dressed ? nothing like how he dressed in Led Zeppelin. I always remember him wearing a blazer, grey trousers and cowboy boots.

"During one session, he strapped on his Gibson Les Paul guitar and stood at the side of me and we played Leave My Kitten Alone, which is an American blues song. "It was on the spot when we played it, without any rehearsal, and Jimmy produced this fantastically fast lead guitar break in the middle of the song.

"It was completely off the cuff, but I think it was one of the best lead breaks he's ever done. "The 1960s was the most magical decade for both music and fashion and I want to help keep it alive.

"I want to play all the old hits again, including The In Crowd, tour the coast and even get into the studio to record new material.

"Musicians who want to go on the road and have that 1960s style just need to get in touch and I'll arrange an audition."

Led Zeppelin fan James White, 21, said: "It would be great if Jimmy revisited his past before The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin. Working with bands such as First Gear helped make him one of the best guitarists in the world.

"They're a part of his history."

Page's management said he was unavailable for comment, but he would consider the reformation later this month.
