Tyler Perry in, Idris Elba out of Alex Cross film reboot

News broke last year that Idris Elba, who starred in "The Wire" and "Obsessed" with Beyonce, was getting ready to take on detective Alex Cross as written by bestseller James Patterson in a new series of films. But today we learn that not only does the film have a new director, but a new star: Tyler Perry.

That's right. Tyler Perry is set to star in the roles originated by Morgan Freeman in the films "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider." This will be the first thriller for Perry and the first movie he'll star in that he hasn't written, directed, and produced since "Diary of a Mad Black Woman." (He also had a small cameo in 2009's "Star Trek.")

Also out are director David Twohy ("Pitch Black," "A Perfect Getaway"), and in is Rob Cohen, who directed "The Fast and the Furious," "XxX," and most recently "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." Tyler Perry in a high-speed car chase? We've got to see this!

EW spoke with QED International ("District 9," "The Fields") CEO Bill Block, who acquired the rights and the initial script by Kerry Williamson and Patterson last year. He explains that while Idris is a great actor (and we know this), when you can get Tyler Perry, you get Tyler Perry.
